Cover Letter
Women need access to reproductive health there is no bottom line, there is no room for discussion, that is a fact. There is a lot of debate about funding and the ethics behind it but I think it’s better for the topic at hand if we all agree that women simply need access to reproductive health and if that makes anyone uncomfortable I can make it easier, Humans need access to reproductive health.
Before access to proper contraceptives, women were known to drink liquid lead, arsenic, and mercury, occasionally together in lou of birth control, to this day women who can’t access an abortion, because it’s illegal or unaffordable attempt at home procedures known to kill the mother. Thankfully in the united states we currently, despite great efforts, you still are legally allowed to obtain an abortion. But more than pregnancy, reproductive health is simply part of the fundamentals of the human body. Clinics such as planned parenthood get criticized, threatened, physically attacked, and threats for defunding just for being associated with abortions but quite frankly that is ignorant. The way funding works for planned parenthood is just like most medical centers, insurance rebates for those who can afford it, government rebates for those with Medicaid, and the rest comes from private donors, with a small portion coming from a program called title x. Federal rebates make up about 40% of the total funding for the organization, so what would happen if the Trump administration decides to “defund” planned parenthood this would not shut down the program to say, it would simply keep 60% of planned parenthood patients from getting the medical attention that they don’t just need but have a right to. I referred to the annual income from planned parenthood and not one of those government dollars went toward terminating a pregnancy, in fact, most insurance companies won’t even cover it, it takes dire situations such as risk to the mother, risk to the fetus, rape, or incest to get your abortion covered.
I feel as though abortion is the most controversial topic within the subject of reproductive health and there are tons of opinions but there is no denying that legalizing abortions has saved more lives than it’s taken because to be completely blunt, a fetus is not a human baby, there is a difference, a fetus has to be in the womb 22 weeks before it can survive outside of the mother and some states are trying to push the time to 8 weeks in utero before you can no longer abort.
Now I am aware I have been all over the place in this letter however my point remains the same, reproductive health is essential to human life and funding and research for every aspect of the issue is crucial if we want to grow into a healthier world.
