Phase 1: Issue Research
Issue questions:
- What are the individual and societal motivations for reproductive control?
- What does funding look like for Planned Parenthood
- How does/did the access to birth control influence a woman's position of power and/or role in society?
1- Women need birth control not just for the right to choose what happens to one's own body but also birth control is an asset that allows us to have some control over the population, in the past 10 years the world population has grown from 6.9 billion people to 7.6 billion that .7 billion people and we are expected to reach almost 12 billion by the end of this century. Birth control is not a just a medication for women but it is also helping keep down the population
2- 41% of Planned Parenthood funding comes from reimbursement from Medicaid and Title X which is a rebate from the government however the money is not set aside for the program, donations make up about 37% of funding and the rest comes from private insurances
3- Between 1920 and 1930 birth rates in America dropped 20%, this is almost entirely due to access to birth control, in between 1960 and 2019 the gender wage gap has diminished from 61 cents to 79 cents for every dollar a man makes. Although these two seem completely different the access to contraception has allowed women to enter the work force and close up the wage gap.
